1 altered beast - rising from my grave, round 1

Dear Readers,

I always had trouble imagining who would be nostalgic for Altered Beast. It must be the power of it being a launch game, as well as a pack-in game for the SEGA Mega Drive. Either way, it's always coming up in SEGA rereleases and the 3D Classics Collection is no different. Let's actually sit down and play it!

It auto scrolls slowly and has a big muscular dude punching monsters that look very mean and very ugly. You can then punch or kick the blue bulls to get powered up enough to transform into a big ugly muscular beast of different kinds. In this 3DS version you can set it to transform into a random beast. Otherwise, each round has a set beast to transform into.

I've played several unsuccessful sessions, so I've been seeing round 1 a lot! Just getting a little further each time before getting a game over again and again. Not many lives to start with in this game...

Round 1 is in the graveyard where I lie until this old guy commands me to rise and fight off loads of zombies, bulls and other nasty creatures. Kicking has a slightly longer range than punching and ducking and kicking lets you kick upwards. Tough enough to play, and it's especially annoying to get punched by the zombie that carries its own head around.

The boss is preceded by a bald guy in a robe with electricity coming off of him that says "Welcome to your doom!" before the round boss gets conjured up.

On the startup screen, Professor Asobin said that it's a bad idea to take on a boss before transforming. You can wait until you do change, but the bonus is smaller. You can wait until the bald guy in the robe gets bored and walks off to postpone facing the boss. This feels kinda weird!

Attacking the guy gets the boss conjured up, but it takes a few hits and he doesn't react to every hit, so it feels weird here too.

Anyway, the first boss is a big gross mound of dirt with a demon sticking out of it. This demon makes copies of its head rain down on you and the graphics have a horror look to them.

The transformation here is a werewolf; a big muscular werewolf that has a charge attack and a projectile punch. This, together with added speed makes it very handy against the boss! Just loads of punching, together with avoiding the raining heads was what I did to beat this round.

On completing a round, you get the transformation orbs taken away from you by a big ugly floating head that laughs at you before you follow it underground.
