13 FINAL FANTASY II - KASHUAN KEEP, WHERE THE ENEMIES START GETTING SERIOUS

Dear Readers,

Kashuan Keep is where things start to get kinda serious and mean with the monsters. At least we had Gordon to keep us company.

We entered the keep and immediately got the absolutely wonderful Ancient Castle music. It kinda feels like it should be a theme to a place that's not teeming with vicious monsters, but that's the way it is.

Right in front of us was the Sunfire. We couldn't utilise it though, so we went past it to the door where we used the Goddess' Bell to open it. On the other side we met Gordon, who was surprised to see us, as he thought he was the only one left who could open the door. His confidence was still kinda low but he joined our party to venture deep into the dungeon. He's not that strong but he's handy with a spear.

The enemies here inflict poison and darkness. That's fine, I've dealt with poison at the very beginning of the game, but back then the poison wore off after battle. It doesn't here. This was the first time I had to seriously use Esuna. After running out of MP, we left the dungeon to go buy some Esuna tomes for everyone.

To my horror, I learned that Esuna only works sometimes in battle. There's an actual failure rate. I didn't know what was going on straight away, so I bought Basuna tomes also. Oh well. Basuna might come in handy at some point anyway. I kept on using Esuna within battle when I needed to while increasing stats.

It's kinda strange but when we're walking along while poisoned and get the green poison flash, other character sprites glow green as well! Funny little quirk!

Then there were the Ogres and Ogre Mages. Hoo boy. Magic using enemies in general really. I don't like enemies being able to use magic to attack us all at once! It makes me nervous! Maybe I should have everyone learn Silence too.

The Ogres in this game look more like Greek Gods than the ones from the first Final Fantasy, where they looked more like Incredible Hulks.

At this point I was always running out of MP, so I had to make multiple trips back to an inn. The Chocobo Forest outside came in very handy indeed! Altogether I had to make 4 or 5 trips back to replenish HP and MP. Whew...

We eventually made it to the boss, the Red Soul! Gordon was startled to see it. He only heard rumours about it before.

The Red Soul was a bunch of flames around a horned skull head that looked like it was screaming. Pretty creepy looking. We tried all our attacking spells on it, but it absorbed every single one of them! Blizzard, Fire, Thunder... they all just made it stronger! We had to fight it with our swords and javelin. It knew Fire VIII, which was kinda scary to see.

We defeated it in the end and continued to obtain Egil's Torch from the treasure chest. Now we could get the Sunfire from the beginning of the dungeon! Woo!
