I continued playing more of this game and found some more tactics.
The bug ship thingy can not only shoot away bits of the shield, but also eat away at it too! I only had to bump against it to nom away at it, just like a real bug. This is handy for when the shield is a big rectangle that rotates its pixels all over the place.
I didn't know I could get protection from the homing drone by hiding in the big pixelly column either. I used this to my advantage as much as I could.
I managed to get 66,381 points, which is my highest score so far.
